Alternative Energy:

The South African government has introduced a draft framework aimed at ensuring the installation of 1 million solar-powered geysers in households and commercial buildings in South Africa over the next five years. South Africa has in the past relied heavily on coal and oil, which used to come cheaply, and as a result other energy forms were not explored, as a result under-exploiting the power of the sun, wind and water. Solar water heating reduces the need for conventional water heating by about two-fifths.

State-owned power utility company ESKOM has been struggling to provide the country with sufficient electricity following unsustainable increases in electricity usage, made worse by South Africa's massive infrastructure drive ahead of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

ESKOM is appealing to businesses and the public at large to decrease their dependency on coal generated electricity, and implement energy-saving measures such as geyser blankets, movement-sensitive lights and investment in alternative energy is fast becoming a daily reality in South Africa. SA is to set aside some R2-billion over the next three years to support various programs aimed at encouraging more efficient use of electricity, generation from renewable resources, installation of electricity-saving devices and co-generation projects thereby encouraging energy efficiency on building standards, subsiding solar powered geysers, supporting the replacement of incandescent light-bulbs, or reducing unnecessary energy use in government offices, in mines and factories and in ordinary homes.

Renewable energy technologies will help to mitigate climate change, and could also help create up to 100 000 new jobs in our country soon.
